Finished Desert Oasis just in time because the webinar recording is posted. Tomorrow, I will look at the recording and make a list of the brushes that I used and tell you the current names in Desert Oasis. I really like this new set and I hope you do. I think I will retire from brush making for a while and just enjoy painting.
I have been so focus on classes, the webinar, various videos, and the brushes that I am neglecting to paint. Not good…bad Skippy…bad Skippy. They have gone, right? Good viruses like us, once invited in, we cannot be invited out. Bad viruses can be invited out, but not good viruses. I bet I could boot you out! So are you telling me your friends are still here?
You see, once invited in we can come and go as we like and can invite others as well. My friends and their friends may or may not be here. Oh gosh, you are turning red. Settle down. Viruses coming and going at all times of the day and night. Why is that? I hate it when he comes and goes like that. It is positively unnerving. I guess for the new readers, it would be good to explain Kevin.
He arrived when I started the blog as a practice blog. I was taking a class and it was time to make my first post. I just started writing and it seemed I started talking with someone. I actually thought it was my alter ego or inner child…or some other oddity. Over the months, the entity grew stronger and bolder.
At some point he announced that his name was Kevin and that he is a good virus…sort of like Glenda is a good witch in the Wizard of Oz. For the most part, he seems harmless. He is actually pretty good company during those long hours on the computer. My online friends like him, but worry about me…go figure. My friends make odd remarks, like did you forget your medications. Wait, I do know a couple, but they do not know my online friends. It is all rather strange.
People send Kevin messages, too. I bet he gets some today. Oh gosh, I digress. The Recorded Webinar. Desert Oasis Brush Category. Wait, one more thing. I did a quick sketch and need to post that…otherwise this post will look very dull. Quick Sketch in Painter Well, seems like you did it again! Cant wait to try these out! Thank ever so much Master Skip! Thanks Skip.. Thanks so much Skip. I downloaded them and gave them a quick try.
They are really wonderful as usual. I was glad to hear that you are taking more time now to paint. You have given all of yourself to so many of us with your brushes and classes, but we also love to see your paintings. Off now to watch the Webinar I missed. Hi Skip I am so impressed with your watercolor drawings. They are amazing and it look simple to make. I am running Painter The only way is to close the painter and start over.
I have never had this problem before with other standard brushes. Any suggestions? Hi Carl, Wet brushes are memory hogs. I suspect that you have problems with the default Real Watercolor brushes, too, but not as much. There are many things that can reduce the performance.
Working at a higher ppi will affect the variant. How many cores are you using; how much memory are you using? Ram is certainly helpful…the more the better, but there is ram that is slower and ram that is faster. I am finding that processor speed is important. I recently bought a new computer and I splurged on processor speed, which made a definite difference.
Have you updated to the latest hot fix for Painter I am finding a lot of There is a speed up of brushes with that hot fix. I wish I knew something to tell you that is concrete, but there are many variables. Hope this helps, Skip. Thank you for your prompt reply Skip. I am running 64 bit Win 7 Ultimate on a 2. Has reduced from to ppi and it helps but I probably have to start saving for a new PC. Any way I hardly ever produce water colors as effortlessly and beautiful as you.
There are discussions at Painter Factory about it. You can ask all sorts of questions and the developers follow the forum as well. Typical now is ab. Hey Carl, That is good news to hear. When I am having trouble with Painter, the first thing I do is check my drivers. Once updated the problems went away. Thanks for letting me know what you found out, Skip. The painting here is gorgeous, I must try the spatter tree look.
Mahalo from Hawaii! Hi Skip, the files downloaded odd for me on my windows 7 pc. Hi Tami, Hope all is well with you. I just tried to download the files on my Windows 7 pc and had no trouble.
I know that You Send it was very busy today and some had to wait to download. I wonder if the files could have been corrupted. The library file should look like this Desert Oasis. And the category file should look like this Desert Oasis. The extensions are odd looking I think, but they are brushlibrary and brushcategory.
If the extension are not present, I would try to download again. If the same problem occurs, try renaming the file and adding the appropriate extension. All you need to do is double click the files and they will install. The brush library creates its own library containing Desert Oasis. And clicking the category installs it into the currently active library.
Please let me know if a re-download works. Hey Skip. I got them now. I re-downloaded, I think you were right on the corrupt thing, they took a long time to download the first time.

Then I plan to download some brushes and start painting. Hi Joyce, I used your email and put you on the subscriber list. You should get a confirmation email that requires a response. But, do check your spam. I hope it is okay now, but I did watch something I think where you showed how to install brushes in Painter Hey Joyce, I found that you are subscribed, too. Hi Skip, I would like to download some of your brushes in Painter Would you be able to tell me where these should be placed?
I am afraid I am not too good at installation. Hi Cynthia, It is very easy to load brushes in On each download page you will find two types of downloads for Painter These work fine for Painter You have one for installing the variants as a category and you have one to install as a library. You have your choice. For the category. Download the file and save it to your desktop or some place on your computer where you can find it again. Now go to your file, which will look like this…drips and runs.
Just double click the file and it will be installed in your current library. For the library. Download the file and save it to your desktop or some place on your computer. Then open Painter. You do not have to do anything at all in Painter, just have it opened. Now go the the library file, which will look like this drips and runs. It will install automatically as a new library in Painter with drips and runs in the library.
Hi Skip, I am new to Painter but have been doing digital art for some time. I have been experimenting with pretty much all the brushes you have here not just drips and runs. Even using your papers.
I am running Your brushes seem to work just like the default painter watercolor brushes without the extreme drip effect you have in your videos. No idea why. Any suggestions? Thanks by the way for all the content you provide on your site. Much appreciated. I think my problem was just a glitch. I restarted painter and eventually got pretty much exactly what you had in the videos. I love your brushes.
I am trying to learn how you make them so I can make my own. So many settings!! Thanks again. You have been a big help. There are lots of controls for any brush…sigh…but the good news…with a little play it all falls into place.
Good luck on your brush making venture. Holler if you need any help. Thank you sooooo much. Greetings Skip in which folder does the paper file go into. Installation is much easier than that. Open Painter and make a new document or open a document in progress. In the Paper Libraries Panel, click on the option button in the upper right corner 4. From the list that opens, select import paper Library and navigate to where you have the paper library and select it and click open.
It will appear in your Paper Libraries Panel. If you are using a Mac, you may need a script that David Gell has provided. I think it may have been, but not sure. Hi again, Skip. I thought it would be really wonderful if I could try to do something like this in an abstract.
I have always wanted to be able to get long drips, such as acrylics do when sprayed with water and then they run down the paper.
I, however, forgot about the paper. So I got very frustrated. Thanks so much for the brushes and papers. You are so generous. Hi Kerry, Loved the work in the link that you provided. If you are trying to get that look…a runny acrylic or oil look, you might enjoy using Real Wet Oils instead of Drips and Runs, which are watercolor brushes. I just finished lunch and was ready to dive into the Drips and papers that go with them. I did see one video on flow maps by you.
Thank you soooo much. Hi Skip. Dive into the heart of their art and discover just what makes Painter rock for them! You can create, edit, modify or import table for AutoCAD drawing quickly and easily. Retoucher removes dust, scratches, stains and other defects.
It is also able to reconstruct the lacking parts of the photo using the information of the surrounding areas.
Design and create easily and professionally looking all kind of perfect Flash slide show or photo-gallery too. Your clients will be absolutely jazzed by the flash slide show You will produce for their websites. No flash skill required. Try now. Have fun playing with them today. It may take a minute or two to get used to them…I still feel clumsy with them.
Let me know what you think after your play. Thank you so much for sharing these great brushes. I like the way you named them this time. It works with my left brain kind of logic. Skip, I was hoping to take your class in Oct. Do you plan to have another one?
I was hoping someone would like the naming convention this time. Like I said in the video, it is so easy to rename them, and I hope folks will personalize them. But Skip.. Hey, the old broad is already thinking about this class!!! Thanks Skip Hugs……. Hmmmmm…good point, but I have mixed emotions about it. I will be using the basic names in the class, but I will not be telling you what brushes to use, but asking you to find particular types of brushes to use. For instance, I will be asking you to do several watercolor washes.
Obviously, the smooth brushes can be washes, but so can the very wet, texture, fill and edge variants and to some degree the thick and thins. Did I answer your question? Great question! These are really great Skip! Stuff like that just comes out; some of the time I notice. These brushes look amazing.
I will enjoy being in class and learning more about using them. I have just read your other comments and I must say the naming convention is interesting, I guess when you paint traditionally, you pick up either a flat brush or a round one or stubby one and proceed, in a way you have sort of done it that way, not limited a brush by its name, interesting! At some point I guess based on our own particular use we should develop a name for ease of use, but I am curious as to how this will develop.
Either way, brilliant work maestro these look really good and I will look for you in class. Dean Tim had a hand in that naming issue…LOL. I think it will make more sense in the first week of class, but I am not going to spill the beans just yet. I am curious, too; I guess we will find out soon enough. Everyone always puts a different spin on them and it is fun to see what develops. This video was so informative! I have committed to practicing each day for at least an hour, played around with the Wacom settings and am much more happier with my mark making!
Thanks so much for the quick video and the time you took to make it. So glad the videos helped. Digital paiinting is a lot closer to traditional painting than one would think. Keep practicing and make notes about certain marks that are made.

Skip has completely ignored me on this post. He is so mean. When he bought the new computer I thought we would have lots of room to play…and there is lots of room, but I play alone. Does anyone know another nice computer virus that might like to room with me. Let me know. Are you ready for Gold Leaf variants in Painter?
Do you know how to turn objects and letters into gold? Read on, you are in for a treat. I love her work. I am especially taken with her sumi-e bamboo with added gold leaf.
Then return here and enjoy my take on this technique that Karen developed. The first week Master Painter Karen Bonaker taught us useful techniques for making flower paintings. She gave us some very fine brushes, too. I taught the second week. The subject was snow landscapes in watercolor; we used the new brush sets, Cool Spring and Drips and Runs. Elaina Moore-Kelly showed wonderful Holiday Card techniques in the third week. But the fourth week really caught my attention.
A few days before, she showed me a technique she was going to use that she called adding gold leaf. Her demo fascinated me. She even used one of the Bristly Dab variants to create the brush that she used for gold leaf. My mind filled with possibilities and I was off and running to make some Gold Brush Variants. They are surprisingly easy to make. I quickly made a few and posted them for the participants in Holiday Open Studio.
But that is not all; he added a number of gold variants of his own. And they are so super!!! Thank you David for all that you do for us. David gave me permission to post his brushes along with mine for you to download. I know you will have fun with them. I have a video for you. Hope you enjoyed the video and like what you saw.
This first video shows you how to capture a gradient. It is very easy. The final video explains how to turn text into gold or any object for that matter. Oh, OK, it is just another term for clone.
I will provide a download link for the brushes and reflection maps at the end of this post. But I promised Painter 11 and X users I would explain how to delete a gradient. Here goes:. I think that is it for the tutorials; now for the download. I hope you enjoy them. Gold Stuff Download. Just to give you an idea of how these brushes work and what you can do with them. I took an old watercolor painting and added gold lettering and gold leaf.
And it is my way of saying to each of you, have the Happiest of Holidays!!! The sound is so annoying. I was beginning to get miffed.
Is it a really, really big present? That is what I want a really, really big present. I am a very good virus. I told you I was going to buy a new computer and I bought it yesterday.
I guess it is the Holiday Spirit getting to me, but I decided you can stay. I am the happiest of viruses! What did you get? Is it fast? Will I be able to zip around and up and down? The basic specs are:. You are getting a bigger room and your own bathroom, so count your blessings. I know I promised to do another video on cloning and I will, but I realized that I need to make the brushes that I am using available to everyone. I am making the Papers available, too. Some of the variants will work with earlier versions, but not in this set.
